Tensions rose this morning when a group of about 30 students staged a foray into a meeting of the Senate of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The meeting concerned changes to the curriculum of the university’s Faculty of Philosophy, and other issues, including professional privileges.

The shouting students, who did not resort to violence, were protesting about the issue of their professional rights post-graduation.

Such interruption of Senate meetings at Greek universities have been commonplace for man years.

The protest comes after the decision to create a new division of the philosophy department that will be geared towards future educators.

The Senate was meeting to decide measures that will update the philosophy department’s programme of studies, so as to better address contemporary realities.
